Module #1: Circuits – Thursday March 29, 2012

In this START module, we discussed electricity and circuits.  Using the analogy of cars on a highway, we learned about electric potential, charges, circuits, and current.  Each group of students used circuit boards to construct several simple circuits.  We used 9-volt batteries to light up LED’s, and we showed how high resistance in a circuit reduces the current and the brightness of an LED in the circuit.  Finally, we experimented with different ways to build circuits with multiple resistors.  We saw that putting resistors in parallel reduced resistance, while resistors in series increased resistance.  The students gained an intuitive sense about the flow of electricity in circuits and the operation of simple electric devices.
